To collaborate with the government of HKSAR on further promoting social enterprise, New World Development Company Limited ("NWD" or "the Group", Hong Kong stock code: 0017) today joins hands with the Tuen Mun Youths Association ("TMYA") to launch a social enterprise named "Road to Green - Striving for a Young New World". The enterprise will provide extensive on-the-job training and job opportunities for young people in need, helping them rebuild confidence in their job prospects and re-integrate into society.

The kick-off ceremony was held at New World Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui, with Mr Tsang Tak Sing, Secretary for Home Affairs of the Government of the HKSAR; Mr Li Ji Yi, Deputy Director General of Youth Department of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Pan Shao Xin, Deputy Director General of New Territories sub-office of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR; Mr Adrian Cheng, Executive Director of New World Development Company Limited; Mr Almon Poon, President of Tuen Mun Youths Association and Mr T C Wan, Chairman of Tuen Mun Youths Association as the honorable officiating guests.

The social enterprise mainly targets at young people aged 15 to 25, with low working skills and lack of working experience. It equips the unemployed youth with the necessary working skills and builds up their self-confidence. Besides, through selling the used clothing discarded by residents or giving them away to people in need, the enterprise not only helps promoting environmental friendliness, but also trains the young people to concern about society, fostering social harmony.

Mr Adrian Cheng, Executive Director of NWD actively supports the HKSAR government's promotion of social enterprise and has driven the Group to contribute to it. He said, "New World Group has been supporting various youth development initiatives. Last year in his Policy Address, the Chief Executive has called on the business community to support the setting up of social enterprises. The Group decided to support it immediately. Today, together with TMYA, we have launched this social enterprise, 'Road to Green - Striving for a Young New World', which is a first-mover in motivating a tri-partite collaboration among the Government, business and society. The enterprise will give those young people a valuable opportunity in rebuilding their self-confidence."

Mr Almon Poon, President of TMYA is grateful to NWD for their generous and unreserved support in this social enterprise. He said, "'Road to Green - Striving for a Young New World' is an enterprise jointly funded by NWD and the Enhancing Self-Reliance Through District Partnership Programme under the Home Affairs Department. What's more, NWD has offered knowledge transfer and resources of property network under their management to us, contributing to the sustainability of this social enterprise. The enterprise will train the young people to become self-reliant and contribute to the prosperity of Hong Kong. We expect to provide training and job opportunities to around 200 young people in the first three years."

The social enterprise of "Road to Green - Striving for a Young New World" comprises three parts:

1. Training and employment

The enterprise will provide extensive on-the-job training to the youth aged between 15 and 25. The outstanding trainees will firstly be employed by the social enterprise, followed by job referral which helps them re-integrate into society eventually. 

2. Sale of used clothing

The core business of this enterprise is the sale of used clothing collected. This business not only provides training and job opportunities to the youth in need, but also supports environmental protection. All revenues will be used in the development of this meaningful enterprise, bolstering its sustainability.

3. Charitable and Social Service

The enterprise will also organize trainees to participate in various voluntary social services so that they can learn to concern about people around and re-integrate into society smoothly. The young people participating in this programme will be able to form a network for mutual-assistance and establish a mentoring relationship, which helps to build a caring and supportive community.
