New Youth New World Summer Internship Programme Leads New Youth New Era and New Youth New Vision Summer Internship Programmes to Raise the Competitiveness of University Students in Hong Kong

Thanks to its booming economy, the economic ties between Mainland China and other international commercial centres have been strengthened. For corporations in Hong Kong and Mainland China and overseas investors, recruiting talents who are familiar with the business environment of Mainland China is a must. Internship experience in Mainland China has become a valuable asset for university students in Hong Kong to stand out from the crowd.

Jointly organised by the Hong Kong United Youth Association (“HKUYA”), New World Development Company Limited (“New World Group”) and HKUYA Student Exchange Network (“SEN”), New Youth New World Summer Internship Programme 2014 and the newly added New Youth New Era (held by SEN) and New Youth New Vision Summer Internship Programme, which is held by Hong Kong Volunteers Association (“HKVA”), provide Hong Kong university students with a total of 300 internship positions in government departments and major corporations in Beijing, Shanghai and Dalian, allowing them to understand the culture and working environment of Mainland China, thereby broadening their horizons and enhancing their competitiveness.

Providing the Best Internship Programmes

Over 1,500 Hong Kong university students applied for the 300 internship positions provided by this year’s programmes, a testament to their growing demand for internships in Mainland China. This year’s judging panel includes Adrian Yip, Counsellor-in-Chief of HKUYA, Helen Lu, Chairperson of HKVA, Andy Kwok, President of SEN, and Maria Cheung, General Manager of Corporate Communication of New World Development Company Limited, who evaluated the applicants based on their abilities such as intellectual thinking, communication skills and understanding of Mainland China.

Adrian Yip, Counsellor-in-Chief of HKUYA, said, “The development of university students is of paramount importance to us. Our annual summer internship programme provides students with a platform to gain a better understanding of Mainland China and self-improve. Throughout the years, we are honoured to have received continuous support from many prestigious organisations from Mainland China, which have provided our participants with various positions in their companies that are highly sought-after by some of the brightest university graduates today.”

Helen Lu, Chairperson of HKVA, said, “Since its establishment decades ago, Hong Kong Volunteers Association cares deeply about the exchange and collaboration between Mainland China and Hong Kong. The introduction of the Funding Scheme for Youth Internship in Mainland China by The Commission on Youth is a great chance for youths to broaden their horizons and immerse themselves in the culture of Mainland China. New Youth New Vision Summer Internship Programme will provide participants with the opportunity to work at government bureaus in Beijing, including social service organisations such as Beijing Volunteer Federation and Beijing No.1 Social Welfare House, and administrative organisations under the government, allowing youths from Mainland China and Hong Kong to understand the under-resourced community and the workings of the government.”

Andy Kwok, President of SEN, said, “Founded by the participants of the first and second year of HKUYA’s summer internship programmes, SEN has collaborated with HKUYA on the annual programme for five consecutive years, with the aim of allowing more university students to benefit from this meaningful programme. Many of our participants found their dream jobs after graduation and some have even become high flyers in Mainland China. With the generous support from The Commission on Youth this year, SEN’s New Youth New Era Summer Internship Programme will be a fabulous opportunity for students to gain concrete work experience that is crucial for their future career development.”

Maria Cheung, General Manager of Corporate Communication of New World Development Company Limited, said, “New World Group has sponsored the New Youth New World Summer Internship Programme for seven years in a row, giving university students the chance to work at various organisations in Mainland China. This year, our Group will also provide internship opportunities under our subsidiaries in New World China Land Limited, New World Department Store China Limited, K11 Art Mall in both Shanghai and Beijing, and also our sister company Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited. We believe this programme will enhance the competitiveness of the participants and broaden their horizons. We will continue to give priority to students with outstanding performances in the programme for the recruitment of interns and management trainees.”

A Vast Array of Openings Offered in the Highly Competitive State-owned Enterprises and Cultural Organisations

Unlike other internship programmes in Mainland China, New Youth New World, New Youth New Era and New Youth New Vision Summer Internship Programmes provide university students with a vast array of internship opportunities in corporations, media agencies such as the China Central Television and China National Radio, the Palace Museum, and Beijing No.1 Social Welfare House. In demonstration of its staunch support, New World Group’s subsidiaries, including New World China Land Limited, New World Department Store China Limited, K11 Art Malls in both Shanghai and Beijing and its sister company Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group Limited, offer various internship positions. Students will have the chance to gain a deeper understanding of the working and corporate cultures in Mainland China through participating in corporate projects, field trips and research reports.

A series of activities will be arranged, allowing students to exchange their views with local students on various local issues such as history, politics, economics and livelihood, thereby acquiring a better understanding of Mainland China. A series of CEO seminars will also be held, allowing participants to exchange their views with successful professionals, thereby broadening their horizons.
