Hip Hing wins three prizes at HKOSH Award 2002
The result of the first "Hong Kong Occupational Safety and Health Award", organized by the Occupational Safety and Health Council and the Labour Department together with 10 institutions, was announced on 10 June this year. There were totally 124 entries. Hip Hing Construction Co., Ltd. gained the Safety Performance Award (Enterprise Section) for its remarkable performance in safety management. Also, the Company obtained the Safety Enhancement Programme Bronze Award and the Best Presentation Certificate of Merit.
For the Safety Performance Award, the judging criteria referred to OSH records such as accident rates, occupational diseases, safety audit scores and safety awards, etc. In recent years, Hip Hing implemented the BS 8800 system and the Safe Working Cycle. In the beginning of this year, it further executed the OHSAS 18001 management system. The Company was one of the few construction contractors in Hong Kong possessing this certification. The effectiveness of its safety management system was reflected by the satisfactory external safety audit scores. The Company obtained over 80% on average in last three years. It has set the target of this year at 85%.
A stringent safety management fosters a good safety performance. Mr. Allan Chan, Executive Director of Hip Hing, said, "Our accident rate has been lower than the industry average over a prolonged period of time. For the year 2001, we recorded an injury rate of 38 per 1,000 workers. And from January to April this year, the rate was 23 per 1,000 workers. We are determined to keep it at a lower level."
Lifting process is one of the high-risk activities. In this regard, Hip Hing established a lifting safety enhancement measures. This movement gained the appreciation of the judging panel. Its measures included improving the control of slinging method, strengthening the supervision of slinging procedure, enhancing the monitoring equipment of tower crane, and providing the lifting safety training. Furthermore, there was a creative inspiration of the Company. It integrated the daily CCTV system and photograph focusing technology into tower crane monitoring equipment in order to further enhance the whole monitoring system.
