Chi Lin Nunnery was granted Quality Building Award 2002
The result of the Quality Building Award 2002 was announced on 28 June 2002. The project team of Chi Lin Nunnery was granted the award for its high quality of inter-disciplinary organization, communications and group dedication in achieving the highest levels of construction excellence.
The Chi Lin Nunnery represents the largest timber construction complex in China. This innovative, mainly handcrafted structure is unprecedented in the architectural history of Hong Kong. The Nunnery refers to the principles of Tang Buddhist architecture, which is famous for its classical magnificence, simple elegance and fine details. It is a project of Hip Hing Construction Co., Ltd., which played the role of both the project manager and the main contractor. The Nunnery was built with the concerted effort and expertise of the developer, the architects, the structural engineer, the building services, the quantity surveyor, together with the ancient Chinese architecture consultants and the Japanese timber consultants.
Over 20 project teams competed for the award. All applicants were assessed against ten criteria including quality, partnering and teamwork, design, innovation, cost, environmental friendliness / sustainability, safety, project management, social and ethical, and customers satisfaction. The jury was composed of the Executive Council Convenor Mr C. Y. Leung, the Provisional Construction Industry Coordination Board Chairman Mr Henry Tang, the Housing Authority Chairman Mr H. K. Cheng, the Director of Buildings Mr C. M. Leung, the University of Hong Kong Pro-Vice Chancellor Mr C. F. Lee, Wong & Ouyang (HK) Ltd. Director Mr Lam Wo Hei, and the Award's Organising Committee Chairman Mr Arthur Yung.
The Quality Building Award, the first of its kind, was organized by 9 professional bodies and property related organizations, namely the HK Institute of Architects, HK Institute of Construction Managers, HK Institution of Engineers (Building Division, Building Services Division and Structural Division), HK Institute of Housing, HK Institute of Surveyors, HK Quality Assurance Agency and the Real Estate Developers Association of HK. It aims to give public recognition of outstanding quality building and promote the partnering team effort in building construction industry.
