The 2nd "New World Mathematics Awards" Encourage and facilitate Chinese professionals to explore Mathematics

Organized by Beijing Tsinghua University, co-organized by International Congress of Chinese Mathematicians ("ICCM"), fully supported by New World Development Company Limited ("NWD" or "New World Group") and China Young Leaders Foundation ("CYLF"), the second "New World Mathematics Awards" ("NWMA") Presentation Ceremony was held successfully in Beijing on 17 December, 2010. NWMA encourages and facilitates Chinese processionals from all over the world to explore Mathematics.

Over 30 outstanding young Chinese undergraduates, postgraduates and PhD Mathematics students were awarded the NWMA this year. Witnessed by over 200 international Mathematicians, teachers and students of Tsinghua University, Mr Gu Bing-Lin, President of Tsinghua University, Professor Yau Shing-Tung, Chairman of International Committee of NWMA ("International Committee"), Miss Sonia Cheng Chi-Man of NWD and members of International Committee presented prizes to the awardees as tokens of appreciation and congratulations.

Mr Adrian Cheng Chi-Kong, Chairman of CYLF said, "Since its establishment, CYLF has been committed to nurturing outstanding young people in the Mainland and Hong Kong. Through supporting academic researches, we hope to encourage young people to broaden their horizons and prepare to meet future opportunities and challenges. This year, we continue to fully support NWMA, not only to encourage Chinese talents to conduct researches in Mathematics, but also to build an exchange platform for Chinese Mathematicians around the world. We hope the Chinese scholars could create synergy through academic exchange."

Speaking at the ceremony, Miss Sonia Cheng said, "NWMA has provided various opportunities for Chinese students to learn and develop in an international paradigm since its establishment in 2007. Today, it is our pleasure to have more outstanding Chinese Mathematics students receiving the award, recognizing their academic achievements in previous years. We hope that awardees will continue their research journey and contribute to the Country's mathematics development."

With an aim to reward Chinese mathematics students for their diligence, NWMA was first initiated and established by Dr Henry Cheng Kar-Shun, Managing Director of NWD, and Professor Yau in 2007. Funded by NWD and CYLF, NWMA encourages Chinese mathematics students to pursuit academic excellence and promotes academic exchanges. The first NWMA was held successfully in Hangzhou on 17 December 2007. It was organized by ICCM and co-organized by Zhejiang University. Mathematics students from the globe have expressed their gratefulness to NWMA by preparing high quality thesis for submission. Topics of the thesis include Pure or Applied Mathematics, Probability and Statistics, Biomathematics, etc. After the adjudication processes led by International Committee and Scientific Committee, a total of over 50 Chinese mathematical students were awarded in the first and second NWMA Presentation Ceremonies. Awardees are from renowned educational institutions such as Harvard University, Stanford University, Tsinghua University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, etc. The third NWMA presentation ceremony will be held in 2013, continuing to support the development of Mathematics in Chinese society.
