New World Springboard, a sustainable community programme run by New World Development Company Limited (the “Group”; Stock Code: 17.HK), organised a learning trip to Beijing from 14 to 16 August 2015 for 10 deserving New World Swimming Academy students with high attendance and outstanding performance. Accompanied by their parents, the young swimmers visited the National Swimming Training Centre to gain valuable insights from elite athletes and attend a training session by coaches who led the national team to Olympic gold medals. They also had an opportunity to experience traditional culture of Beijing.
Dr Adrian Cheng, Executive Vice-chairman and Joint General Manager of New World Development, said, “We are truly grateful for the tremendous support from the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association. The students were given rare access to the National Swimming Training Centre for a special session to improve skills and widen horizons. This learning trip demonstrates our commitment to nurturing youths.” National team coach Liu Haitao encouraged the aspiring students to pursue their dreams. Students also picked up tips from elite swimmers who shared their personal experiences of developing into professional athletes. Looking up to the elite swimmers as role models, the students were motivated to set goals.
It was an eye-opening experience for the students and their parents who tried specialty cuisine and went sightseeing at the Great Wall, the Beijing National Stadium (Bird's Nest) and Beijing National Aquatics Center (Water Cube), as well as hutong and siheyuan courtyard houses. They also learnt about the intangible cultural heritage of remarkable craftsmanship at a painting Peking Opera mask workshop.
The New World Springboard sustainable community programme provides under-resourced youths with up to seven years of free professional sports training, aiming to improve their social mobility. In collaboration with the Hong Kong Amateur Swimming Association since 2012, the New World Swimming Academy has been providing training for close to 250 under-resourced students. Apart from sports training, New World Springboard also focuses on the holistic development of students. To this end, the Group has been recruiting staff as mentors who help students develop a positive outlook on life. For details of New World Springboard, please visit www.nwspringboard.com.hk.
