The delegation also visited the water supply and management infrastructure developments to gain a deeper understanding of the importance of water conservation.
Gary Chen opined that the trip has a very special meaning and said: "I am glad to have had the opportunity to visit the major water management infrastructure development projects. A balance has to be maintained between the needs of the environment and society on the one hand and achieving economic growth on the other. The water from Dongiang River is a source of stable water supply to Hong Kong which in turn benefits local economic development. Hong Kong people have a special feelings towards the Dongjiang River. This field trip has enriched the delegation's knowledge of our water resources."
During the two-day trip, the delegation visited Xinfengjiang Reservoir (aka Wanlu Lake) located in City of Heyuan, and looked at its water storage and water supply capabilities, protection measures and the development opportunities in the reservoir area, followed by a visit to a wastewater treatment plant on the southern side of the city.
On the second day, the delegation was impressed by the historical background of the Dongjiang water supplies project and the contributions by various parties on the protection of water resources after the visit to the Jinhu Pumping Station and Dongshen Water Supply Improvement Works Exhibition Centre in Dongguan. The trip ended at the Bio-nitrification Plant and the Shenzhen Reservoir. The delegation benefitted tremendously from the detailed explanations of Prof K C Ho and the government officials during the whole journey, which will help them promote water conservation in the day-to-day operations and in training the staff of their companies.
