Government Officials Visit The Green Atrium to See New World Development’s Vision of Green Building and Sustainability

The Under Secretary for the Environment Ms. Christine Loh Kung-wai, JP, led officials from the Environment Bureau, the Architectural Services Department and the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department on a visit to The Green Atrium, which was established by New World Development Company Limited (“New World Development”), earlier to evaluate the property sector’s most innovative green building project.

"The Environment Bureau's green building dialogue platform with the property sector is on-going and we are interested to understand the sustainability efforts of the commercial sector,” says Ms. Christine Loh.

The HKSAR Government delegation was introduced to the Hong Kong BEAM Plus Gold level certified green building features of The Green Atrium, including vertical greenery on the façade, a patented Air Induction Unit to maximise natural ventilation, rooftop solar panels,  a wind turbine, a food-waste composter, rainwater harvesting, an aquaponics pond and an organic farm.

The Green Atrium’s team also shared details of green tenancy support, organic farm plot rental, regular school tours and green lifestyle events to promote conservation awareness in everyday life. Selected as a finalist in the Green Building Award 2016 (New Buildings category: Completed Projects – Commercial Building), The Green Atrium actively supports the Government’s latest target for 2030: to apply the latest technology and enhanced operational techniques to achieve a reduction of Hong Kong’s carbon intensity by 65 to 70% from 2005 levels.

The Green Atrium is a testament to New World Group’s vision of building a better society through innovation and sustainable growth. Occupying a commercial plot in Yuen Long next to a residential project, The Green Atrium aims to demonstrate the value of an artisanal, holistic and eco-friendly lifestyle to the Hong Kong community through sustainable architectural design, education programmes and eco-friendly retail and F&B options. To date, about 10,000 individuals from the wider community have engaged with The Green Atrium and New World Development’s vision through school tours and visits focusing on organic farming and green technology.

Ms. Loh added, "The Green Atrium and the ideas behind the pursuit of sustainability by New World Group are most welcome; and I am especially glad to hear buyers and tenants are demanding more and more green features."
