Honourable guests Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration; Adrian Cheng, Executive Director and Joint General Manager of New World Development Company Limited; Stanley Wong, Board Chairman of the Hong Kong Dance Company; and Yang Yuntao, Artistic Director of the Hong Kong Dance Company, were present as officiating guests of the event.

As an active supporter of local arts and cultural events, New World Group title-sponsors this renowned dance performance to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Avenue of Stars, a project financed and managed by The Group. Avenue of Stars was launched in 2004 to honour the contributions of local film professionals to the Hong Kong and international film industries. Over the years, numerous up-and-coming artist groups have taken advantage of the free performance venue as a platform to reach out to a wide audience, making it a perfect stage for young arts performers. Moreover, Avenue of Stars has also become a must-see tourist attraction with a total number of visitors reaching 57 million by April 2014.

Adrian Cheng, Executive Director and Joint General Manager of New World Development Company Limited, said, “In the past ten years, by financing the construction of Avenue of Stars and undertaking its management, New World Group has managed to keep track of the achievements of outstanding film workers over the last century and pay tribute to the contributions of film artists. The Group is delighted to have the chance to title sponsor such a spectacular dance performance, The Butterfly Lovers, which coincides with the 10th anniversary of Avenue of Stars. As a staunch supporter of the development of local arts and culture, we look forward to promoting various events to further the development of Hong Kong’s arts and culture and injecting more energy and creativity into its artistic atmosphere.”

Mrs Carrie Lam, Chief Secretary for Administration, remarked, “The Hong Kong Dance Company stages regular tour performances overseas and around Mainland China, and participates in arts festivals all over the world. Their consummate skills and inspired performances have touched the hearts of international audiences, and contributed to the cultural exchange in dance between local and overseas groups.  On top of that, the company also spares no effort to expand the audience base for local arts and culture by actively organising educational and out-reaching activities about Chinese dance for schools and various communities.”

Stanley Wong, Board Chairman of Hong Kong Dance Company, remarks, “The Hong Kong Dance Company is devoted to exploring and developing the art of dance in Hong Kong, and has nurtured a great number of local and overseas audiences over the years. The Butterfly Lovers retells four timeless Chinese legends with a blend of contemporary art and Chinese dance with Hong Kong characteristics, creating a poignant dance poem that will impress the world.”

Grand Dance Poem The Butterfly Lovers was performed at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre from 13 to 15 June 2014. Based on four popular Chinese legends, and accompanied by The Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto, The Butterfly Lovers is a mix of a poignant love story and Chinese dance style and moves that offers the audience a poetic tribute to eternal love.
